DMAX Foundation is a Bryn Mawr-based non-profit organization founded in 2013 by Lee and Laurie Maxwell after they lost their 18-year-old son Dan to suicide. A three-sport athlete and National Honor Society student, Dan, who had been depressed for 18 months prior to his death, isolated himself from his many friends, afraid that it wasn’t okay to tell them how he was really doing.
The Foundation is focused on creating trusting environments for honest and caring conversations about mental health so students can understand and support each other.
To accomplish this, DMAX Foundation is establishing and supporting DMAX Clubs on college campuses for all students to talk about the difficult emotional issues they may be experiencing. The clubs help reduce the sense of isolation and hopelessness for students who may be suffering from mental or emotional issues and can’t or don’t seek the help they need. DMAX Clubs on college campuses meet regularly for talk, fun, food and activities. DMAX Foundation also hosts an annual educational event and a Casino Night to raise awareness, support and funding for this important work.
